How Clinics Can Successfully Integrate New Somatic Therapy Services

Findings from a Study of Mindful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT)

Presented by:
Cynthia Price, PhD MA LMT
Research Professor, UW School of Nursing
Director of Non-profit Center for Mindful Body Awareness.

Cynthia Price, PhD MA LMT is a Research Professor at the University of Washington and the Director of the non-profit Center for Mindful Body Awareness. Her clinical and research expertise is focused on interoceptive awareness and its role in health and well-being. She developed Mindful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT), a mindfulness-based approach designed to facilitate interoceptive awareness and related skills for self-care and emotion regulation. Dr. Price’s research is aimed at the study of MABT within community care, particularly for those in recovery from trauma, chemical dependency, chronic pain or other life stressors. She has co- authored two scales to measure interoceptive awareness: the Scale of Body Connection (SBC) and the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA). Cynthia is committed to increasing access to integrative health care for underserved populations through her research, teaching, and service.

This webinar will present findings from an implementation science study that examined how a clinic responded to the introduction of a new somatic therapy approach, Mindful Awareness in Body-oriented Therapy (MABT) in their services. Included will be the strategies used to promote knowledge of MABT, acceptance as measured by referrals and scheduling within the clinic system, and differences in response by discipline in an integrative clinic context. Focus group results highlight the successes, including how this approach addressed a gap in services, and point to next steps for increased access and sustainability.

The Main Points of This Workshop:

  • Highlight the importance of and processes involved in implementation science
  • Describe the clinic system where this study took place
  • Describe the patients served (primarily chronic pain with co-occurring trauma)
  • Describe the MABT approach
  • Describe the implementation results
  • Discuss the clinical implications and next steps

Participants will learn:

  • Define the key components of implementation science (e.g. appropriateness, adoption)
  • Identify strategies to enhance implementation
  • Describe response to MABT implementation in clinical care for chronic pain

  • Welcome
  • USABP Announcements
  • Presentation, Demo & Experiential
  • Q & A
  • Overtime discussion (after the event formally concludes)
